Chaudhry released on bail

Suva: The former Minister for Finance Mahendra Pal Chaudhry has been charged by the Fiji Police with several charges related to money laundering and tax evasion.
Fiji’s Attorney General Aiyaz-Sayed Khaiyum has clarified issues surrounding the charges against Labour leader Mahendra Chaudhry - saying the overseas press has made false allegations on the issue.
Sayed-Khaiyum clarifies that the charges being brought against Chaudhry is not to do with the issues he was being investigated for a few years ago, but on technical currency and money laundering issues brought against him by the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
The Labour leader was questioned by Police, charged and appeared before a Magistrates Court who has referred the matter to the High Court.
Sayed-Khaiyum says only the Courts will decide on the veracity of the matter and how charges should pan out during the trial process.
He says a few years ago, government asked a team of lawyers and accountants to look at general allegations against Chaudhry made through anonymous letters, and not from the Police or from the Reserve Bank.
Chaudhry’s case has been adjourned to July 30. He has been ordered to surrender his passport and report daily to the Suva Point Police Post.
No plea was take and he was released on $1,000 bail.
