Fiji PM attacks false prophecies

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has accused people with political agendas of trying to cause instability by spreading so called prophesies of an impending disaster.

Bainimarama says these figures are trying to scare tourism operators and investors with their ridiculous rumours.

A prophesy by a Reverend in Nadi of a looming earthquake and tsunami on Wednesday 23rd June has been generating much talk recently.

However Bainimarama says no one should be bothered.

"I think its just about a group of people trying to bring about instability through this prophecy. Unfortunately I’ve heard some real high profile figures are spreading these stories. I don’t know what they are going to gain out of it, but I guess some high profile figures from the SDL office and what they want to do is to create some instability in our tourism industry especially investors. I really don’t see why anyone should be bothered by this".

One of the people spreading the word on the impending disaster is FRU Board Chairman Bill Gavoka, a known supporter of the SDL party.

Gavoka sent an email this week to tourism operators urging them to take the prophesy seriously.

He wrote that this is not a prophesy made by cult leaders, but by a mature and balanced pastor. Gavoka is asking people to pray and prepare before the disaster strikes at 2.30 pm on Wednesday next week.

He told FBC News he stands by his belief.

"It has been prophesied by one of our pastors in one of the Christian denominations that there will be an earthquake on Wednesday the 23rd somewhere in the pacific or somewhere in the Americas and that Fiji will feel the brunt of activities in the sea. Specifically huge waves, a tsunami. The prophecy is commanding a lot of dialogue in the Christian community across the country and my background was tourism, I spent 30 years in the industry and I know that they’re very vulnerable and I remember what happened in Thailand in 2004 with the Asian tsunami and I thought I would be doing my duty to alert them to this and prepare themselves for something real. According to the prophecy it will be around 2.30 in the afternoon.”

However Bainimarama says he is only worried about the mental stability of those spreading the so called prophesy.

"I think they talking about some disaster or phenomenon. Something like an earthquake or tsunami. How they can detect that from here, I really don’t know because even earthquakes cannot be detected until it strikes, so I really don’t know where they are getting the credibility of the story from and I really am worried about their state of mind.”
