Don't fight over land: Bainimarama
Fiji’s sugar industry had suffered because of non-renewal of leases, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama told the people of Tailevu today.
Mr Bainimarama said the sugar industry, mostly farmed by Indians, used to be the backbone of Fiji's economy, but had suffered due to non-renewal of leases.  He told the Tailevu Provincial Council not to fight over land.

Addressing the council, Mr Bainimarama said fighting for land would not bring anything but overgrown properties.

He said the land issue should be put aside if Fiji was to move forward, Radio Fiji reported.

Also, at the meeting the People of Tailevu were urged to boil water as it was the main cause of health problems in the Province.

The council was told tests had confirmed that the water was unsafe for drinking.
"Water is the main cause of sickness in the Tailevu Province,  Korovou Hospital Medical officer in charge Dr James Kalouvaki told the meeting.

Dr James urged council members to go back and inform the people to boil every drinking water. He said test taken and confirmed that water was not safe unless boiled.

He warned there had been an increase of Typhoid, Leptopharesis and diarrhea cases and these were all water related disease. He also apologized to the Tailevu Council for the non-implementation of awareness programmes.
