Fiji Barbarians victorious

Sigatoka: The IRB Pacific Rugby Cup 2010 got off to intriguing start with defending champions Fiji Warriors and last year's runners up Upolu Samoa both suffering defeats in local derbies against the Fiji Barbarians and former winners Savai'i Samoa respectively.

Warriors, the first Fijian side to lift the Pacific Rugby Cup crown, fell 23-20 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka on Thursday after prop Vesi Rarawa scored a last minute try to seal a comeback win for the Barbarians.

Apia Park in the Samoan capital was the venue for the battle of the former champions, 2006 winners Savai'i shutting out their opponents - who succeeded them as champions - in the second half to win 23-10.

The other local derby saw 2008 champions Tautahi Gold run out 26-10 winners over fellow Tongans Tau'uta Reds in a match that only came to life in the second half at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku'alofa.
