Hockey World Cup starts under security cloak

New Delhi: The Hero Honda Hockey World Cup kicked off Sunday with a thick security cover thrown around the national capital.

Despite threats from Al Qaeda, all teams have arrived after getting full assurance on foolproof security from the Indian government.

The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, the venue of the tournament, has been turned into a fortress. Snipers have been posted on rooftops while gun-totting commandoes, metal detectors and bomb disposal squads have been kept  standby.

Security personnel have taken complete control of the renovated stadium where the World Cup is being played for the first time. The media was allowed to step just two days before the event and are being checked at multiple points before being escorted to the stadium.

The team hotel, Le Meridian, also resembles a fortress and the security officials have taken every possible step to prevent a repeat of last year’s Lahore incident when terrorists opened fire on the team bus of the Sri Lankan cricketers that left five killed and six injured.

Even the media is not allowed inside the lobby of the team hotel to interact with the players.

Delhi Police's security cell is providing security cover to the players, while the local police and commandos of the elite National Security Guard (NSG) have been pushed into action besides other paramilitary forces, which are guarding the National Stadium.

More than 5,000 security personnel have been posted and all the teams are being escorted by armed policemen while moving to and from the stadium, which is situated in the heart of the city.

In fact, two-three armed security personnel are travelling with the players in the team bus.

Besides hosts India, Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, South Korea, and Spain are taking part in the tournament.
