India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is taking digital governance to new heights when she responded expeditiously to a request on twitter from an elderly lady in distress to arrange her son’s visa from the US.
The women in question, Sarita Takruu, a resident of Haryana state of India has lost her husband and was expecting her son to come back from the US to perform last rites of his father, only to be told that the US embassy was closed due to Dusshera and Moharram.
She was obviously appalled and took recourse to twitter to reach out help directly from the EAM.
The minister was quick to respond and assured a quick and empathetic response.
Ms. Swaraj responded “I am sorry to know about the sad demise of your husband. Just wait – I will help you.”
Following this, the complainant received an immediate call from the US embassy and corrective action was taken.
This is another instance of Minister’s prompt responses to Indians in distress abroad.
