Change of guard at India's Bharatiya Janata Party

New Delhi: The change of guard at the BJP headquarters went off smoothly and as planned by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), as some political analysts observe.
Sushma Swaraj took over as the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha while outgoing opposition leader L.K.Advani became the chairman of the BJP parliamentary party.
Sushma Swaraj said that she was happy that Advani will guide her in her new job. Incidentally Advani has seen to it that his preteges are in both houses of parliament, Sushma Swaraj in the Lok Sabha and Arun Jaitley in the Rajya Sabha.
Meawhile Nitin Gadkari of the Maharashtra unit of the party, took over as the president of the BJP, replacing Rajnath Singh.
'Gadkari is an able, capable and skilled political activist and the parliamentary board has agreed on his name as the new party president,' Singh said announcing the change in party leadership.
After the announcement was made, a beaming Gadkari, 52, said 'I started off as a small activist of the party in my student days, putting up posters of the party, and this is a big responsibility for me. I want to assure my seniors that I will not do any work that will be against party. I will be sitting on the chair but would need your help. You will have to cooperate with me,' he said.
Gadkari has a strong backing of the party's ideological parent organisation RSS, and his taking over is seen as the strengthening of RSS' hold over the BJP.
