Uttarakhand floods: Rescue ops continue

Dehradun, June 27 (IBNS): Relief and rescue operations continued in full swing on Thursday despite bad weather prevailing in several parts of flood-ravaged Uttarakhand.

According to reports, 1,00,000 people have been evacuated so far by the efforts of the Air Force, the Army and paramilitary troops.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said a total of 1,495 people were evacuated on Thursday.

"While 1,495 people were evacuated on Thursday, a total of 1,829 are still stranded," NDMA Vice Chairman M Shashidhar Reddy said at a press conference.

He said a total of 2,232 houses have been damaged in the calamity.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army continued rescue operations from both Badrinath and Harsil.

The Army evacuated 532 stranded people on Thursday by air from Harsil, leaving just 100 to 150 locals to be evacuated.

At least 450 people were evacuated by helicopters from Badrinath on Thursday.

"All able bodied and willing people were motivated by Army to undertake journey from Badrinath to Joshimath by a combination of foot and vehicles," the Army said in a statement.

A total of 900 people set out on foot to rescue camps on Thursday.

While 244 have already reached Joshimath, the balance are on their way and are expected to reach by Thursday night.

Evacuation is also on in Pithoragarh district of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

As many as 100 people were evacuated from isolated and cut off places and were brought to Dharchula where they were given food, water and medical aid by the Army.

Hemkund axis has been totally cleared of all pilgrims, the Army statement said.

Meanwhile, Army veterinary team returned to Joshimath on Thursday after providing medical assistance to stranded animals and mules between Govindghat and Ghagria.

Animal rations and veterinary medicines were also rushed to Gauri Kund for use by local people for their stranded live stock.

The Army on Thursday said that it constructed another temporary foot bridge at Sonprayag for use by local population.

More than 8,500 Army personnel and 13 helicopters have been pressed into service to provide rescue and relief in Uttarakhand so far.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on the other hand airlifted a total of 1669 persons, including about 628 from Harsil and 706 from Badrinath on Thursday, the IAF said in a statement.

A weather recce was undertaken by C 130J from Hindan over flood affected areas during early morning hours on Thursday.

The IAF have been flying 201 sorties on Thursday and dropped approximately 33,070 kg of relief material.

Since June 17, the IAF in 'Op Rahat' has airlifted a total of 15,113 persons, flying a total of 1,820 sorties and dropping/landing a total of 2,81,080 kg of relief material and equipment, IAF statement said.

"Operating from Dharasu Mi 17 V5s flew about 58 sorties airlifting about 593 persons from Harsil and Maneri to Dharasu up till 1530 h. Since then bad weather was encountered," the statement said

For the helicopters operating from Gauchar, weather affected the operations till 10 am after which flying to Badrinath commenced and approximately 600 people have been evacuated from Badrinath till 3 pm. Since then bad weather was encountered, it said.

"Operating from Simla where helicopter operations commenced at 0900 h, 26 sorties were flown airlifting approximately 111 passengers including 07 casualties," the IAF statement said.

Army Chief General Bikram Singh will visit Uttarakhand on Friday.

Earlier, mass cremations of people who died in Uttarakhand floods, continued in Kedarnath town on Thursday.
