Death toll in Uttarakhand rises to 680

Dehradun: The official death toll in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand has gone upto 680 as of yesterday. Authorities fear as many as 5,000 people may have been killed.

Speaking to the media at Jollygrant Airport, disaster management minister Yashpal Arya said, "At least 5,000 people must have been killed in the deluge that inflicted heavy damage on vast tracts of land especially in Kedarnath valley."

Whilst 19,000 people await help, the Indian Air Force and Army have been working hard to evacuate pilgrims and those stranded in badly affected areas. Operation Rahat, initiated by the indian air force have airlifted 8,222 people and combined 1,48,550kg in loads dropped or landed, using 1,0888 sorties.

Two medical aid centres each have been set up in Gaurikund, Goucher, Joshimath and Harsil. The Indian Railways have also initiated aid by running a special train service that has been running since the 20th of June. Passengers who were previously stranded in Uttarakhand have been allowed to travel via these special trains from Haridwar to Dehradun free of charge.

Non-governmental agencies have also extended their support by providing railway authorities present at these stations, with supplies such as food and water bottles. BSNL state-run telecoms provider has activated helpline numbers available free of cost nationwide for those wanting to get information on missing people, where they had last accessed their BSNL mobile phone.

In addition, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have announced they will be providing $150,000 in aid for the non-governmental organizations working in areas badly affected in Uttarakhand.

The support will aim to provide emergency relief for families residing in remote areas of the state.
