Sachin misses 100th ton but carry India to a win

New Delhi: Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, narrowly missed out on his 100th internaional century, but along with V.V.S. Laxman steered India to a comfortable five-wicket victory over West Indies on the fourth day of the first Test at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium here on Wednesday.
India chased the target of 276 runs with five wickets to spare for their first win against the West Indies at the Kotla. India also equalled the second highest successful run chase at home. Ironically, the visitors had successfully chased an identical target at the same venue in 1987.
It was also 16th Test win under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captainship in 32 matches.
Though the match finished with one and half day to spare, it was not an easy win as the drama continued till the end as Yuvraj Singh was clean bowled by Darren Sammy with one more run required to register the victory.
India resumed the run chase on the penultimate day requiring 124 more runs to win the Test.
Tendulkar made 76 while Laxman hit seven boundaries in his unbeaten 101-ball 57 innings.
India went in for lunch needing 22 more runs to beat West Indies after Devendra Bishoo trapped Tendulkar lbw on 76 to extend the wait for master's 100th international ton as India eye victory.
Tendulkar looked good for the monumental landmark as he hit boundaries at will and accumulated runs rapidly. The master hit 10 boundaries in his 148-ball 76 knock.
Tendulkar also added quick 71-run partnership with Laxman to lead the Indian run chase. The duo compiled runs rapidly as India went pass 200-run mark in the morning session of the fourth day quickly.
Tendulkar hit five boundaries to complete his 62nd Test fifty off 111 balls after India lost Rahul Dravid (31) early on Day 4.
Windies pacer Fidel Edwards gave the visitors a lifeline in the match when he clean bowled Dravid in the fourth over of the day. Dravid could only add a run to his overnight score.
India now lead 1-0 in the three-match series against the Windies.
