Treasure trove at Sai Baba chamber

Puttaparthi: A treasure trove of cash, gold and silver was found in the private chamber of spiritual guru Sai Baba who died in April, leaving an empire of wealth and charitable institutions.
Reports said it took 36 hours to count the money- Rs 11.56 crore in cash- found in his room at Puttaparthi. The haul of gold is 98 kilos while 307 kilos of silver was also found in the chamber- Yajur Mandir.
His room was opened on Thursday by the members of his Trust and his personal assistant Satyajit in the presence of two retired judges. An assessor of the Income Tax department was also present.
Sai Baba's nephew R J Ratnakar said the money was deposited in the bank account of the Trust Baba had set up.
Spiritual guru Sathya Sai Baba died on April 24 from cardio-respiratory failure after spending nearly four weeks in a hospital run by his own trust.
He was the incarnation of god for his countless followers worldwide and after he died Indian cricket stars Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, yoga guru Ramdev, Union ministers Praful Patel and Vilas Rao Deshmukh, Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh were among those who touched down on the tiny village to catch a last glimpse of Sai Baba.
The Andhra Pradesh government had constituted a five-member committee headed by Finance Secretary L V Subramanyam to look the affairs of Sai Baba’s charitable trust, the Sathya Sai Central Trust, which is believed to control assets of over Rs 40,000 crore.
The government does not want one of the world’s biggest trusts, known for its extensive philanthropic work that include opening schools, colleges, hospitals and providing drinking water to over a million people, to go into wrong hands.
Born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparti, he was followed by an estimated 20 to 50 million people worldwide after claiming to be a reincarnation of spiritual guru Sai Baba of Shirdi at the age of 14.
Sai Baba was to turn 85 this year.
