Osama aftermath: Pak arrests 25 suspects

Karachi: Pakistan arrested 25 suspects on Friday, days after US military operations killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in the country’s Abbottabad district, reported Dawn News on Saturday.

According to reports, while conducting a search operation in the district, Pakistan arrested 25 people from different areas, namely Nawashehar, Kakul Village, Nadian and Thanda Choha.

Meanwhile, Shuja Pasha, the chief of Pakistan spy agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence), has left on Friday for Washington to explain his country's position on the presence of Osama before his killing by US Navy Seals, leading Pakistani daily Dawn reported on Saturday.

There are also other reports in media that Pasha might step down as ISI chief.

The paper said "Pasha set off on the critical mission for putting an end to misgivings about Pakistan in the US a day after army`s top brass conceded the failure of intelligence in detecting Osama`s presence in the vicinity of the elite military training institute and ordered an investigation."

The paper's web edition quoting unconfirmed news sources said Pasha had met the station chief of America's CIA in Islamabad and defended the track record of Pakistan in the fight against terror.

Osama bin Laden, the 54 year old international terrorist and architect of the 9/11 attack in USA, was killed by the US Navy Seals and CIA operatives in a firefight in his hideout compound in Pakistan's border city of Abbottabad on May 2. Abbottabad is in close proximity of

Dawn quoted Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir saying: “It is easy to say that the ISI and elements in the government are in cahoots with the Al Qaeda. This is a false hypothesis. This is a false charge."

Meanwhile, The Daily Beast news website reported that Gen Pasha would step down as the ISI chief and it is only "a matter of time”.

Pushed to the corner over the Osama issue, Pakistan foreign secretary Salman Bashir on Thursday said its relations with United States have not nosedived.

Reiterating that the action of US was a covert operation and Pakistan was not consulted, Bashir said their relations with US is not nose-diving according to his understanding.

He said unilateralism is not the right way, but wavered on giving a clear answer on what Pakistan would do if US again targets another terrorist holed up in Pakistan.

He said the cooperation with USA is a two-way street and said in the bigger domain of international law they have cooperated with US and “we look forward to this cooperation.“

Referring to his recent US visits, Bashir said: “We are strategic partners.” He said ties have not nosedived, according to “our understanding.”

“That the relationship is at the lowest point is not quite true,” he said.
