Military might show on R-Day

New Delhi: India on Wednesday celebrated its 62nd Republic Day with the annual parade that displays the rumble of military might and colourful tableaux encapsulating the cultural diversity of the nation of over 1.2 billion people.

The day passed off peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir also as apprehensions were rife that the state could witness trouble over the government’s refusal to allow Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hoist the Tricolour at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other top leaders were in attendance in New Delhi's elaborate Republic Day celebrations.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was this year’s guest and, accompanied by his wife Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, he participated in the function, cheering and clapping.

As per tradition, after unfurling of the National Flag, the National Anthem was played.

Thereafter President Pratibha Devisingh Patil conferred the Ashoka Chakra on Major Laishram Jyotin Singh (posthumous) of the Army Medical Corps who was posted in Kabul.

The President, who is the supreme commander of the country’s armed forces, took the salute of the parade.

The highlight of this year’s parade was the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, participating in the Republic Day Parade on the Rajpath for the first time. The twin seater Trainer Version of the Tejas is being displayed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The DRDO equipment columns include an array of Naval Underwater Weapons such as torpedoes, Life Support Systems such as Submarine Escape Suit and the Long Range Solid State Active Phased Array Radar.

The Indian Army displayed its most advanced T-90 tank, Brahmos Launcher System, Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher, Reporter Tactical Control Radar, NBC Recce Vehicle, Indigenous Pontoons Movable Section Brigade, Integrated Network Platform, Prahar-510 Armoured Troop Carrier and a flypast by the Army Aviation Corps’ Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv.

While the Indian Navy displays scaled down models of the aircraft carrier INS Viraat, Talwar kilo class submarine and the Mig-29K, the 4th Generation fighter jet inducted last year, the Indian Air Force tableau focuses on Network Centric Operations based on the AFNET, the state-of-the-art gigabyte digital information grid, also dedicated to the nation last year.

The parade ceremony commenced at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs by laying wreath.

An eternal flame burns at the Amar Jawan Jyoti to commemorate the indomitable courage of Armed Forces personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland.

The Amar Jawan, the immortal soldier, is symbolised by a reversed rifle topped by a helmet.

A heavy security cloak is thrown in and around the nationa capital as well as in other strife-torn parts of the country, including North-East, Maoists-infested states and J&K.

Meanwhile, J&K also celebrated the day peacefully though the BJP rejected an offer by state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to join the national flag hoisting ceremony at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, even as senior BJP leaders arrested in the state were released.

The Clock Tower at Lal Chowk where the BJP wanted to hoist the Tricolour was fortified but life around the area goes on as usual.

A parallel march by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) to foil BJP's plans had earlier been announced by its chief Yasin Malik, but the leader remained untraceable, according to media reports.

BJP leaders, including Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, had remained arrested in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday morning even as the temperatures cooled down over the party's move to hoist the tricolour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar with an Ekta Yatra.

Omar Abduallah has thanked the BJP for ending their Yatra peacefully, reports said.

Vowing to hoist the tricolor at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on Tuesday courted arrest after their rally was stopped at a bridge that connects Jammu and Kashmir with Punjab.

They were kept for the night at a hotel in Kathua.

About 5000 police and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel were deployed at the border of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
