Indian diplomat charged with wife's assault

New Delhi: India's External Affairs Ministry (MEA) on Sunday said it is carefully looking into the incident of an Indian diplomat in London allegedly escaping prosecution for his diplomatic immunity despite assaulting his wife.

The Daily Mail in UK reported that a high-ranking Indian diplomat has claimed immunity from prosecution after being questioned by police over claims that he assaulted his wife at their official residence.

The diplomat in question is the third most senior Indian diplomat in Britain, who allegedly assaulted his wife after a heated argument at the couple’s home in Golders Green, North-West London, the paper reported.

In response to questions involving the official in High Commission of India (HCI) London, the Official Spokesperson of MEA said: "Ministry and HCI are aware of and carefully looking into the incident."

"It involves sensitive and personal issues, pertaining to individuals," the spokesperson said.

"It is premature to make any further comment at this stage," the spokesperson said.
