China unhappy with India's Nobel attendance

New Delhi: Hinting at its disapproval of India attending Friday’s Nobel prize ceremony at Oslo, China on Thursday once again urged other countries to stay away from the function.

China will be boycotting the Nobel Prize ceremony in protest against conferring of the Nobel Peace Prize to jailed Chinese human rights activists Liu Xiaboa and has reiterated its appeal to other nations to follow suit, the Hindu reported.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu, said, “We are of the view that countries, on the basis of mutual respect, equal treatment and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs have, dialogue and cooperation,”, adding that there are some ‘basic norms governing international relations’.

Refusing to comment on India’s decision to attend the prize ceremony, she said countries ‘can tell right from wrong’ and hoped the invited nations will ‘uphold justice’ while taking any decision.

“I think developing country to country relations should follow certain principles,” Jiang added.

She claimed that ‘the majority of the international community’ did not support the ‘erroneous decision by the Nobel committee’ and said that ‘over 100 countries and international organizations had expressed support’ to China’s position.

New Delhi has reportedly decided to ignore China’s considerable pressure and attend the ceremony after contemplating forgoing the ceremony in order to help smoothen delicate ties between the two nations.

However, the Indian government finally decided that the prize ceremony cannot be seen as a bilateral issue and decided to depute its representative.

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao is also visiting India mid-December and India is eager to avoid any new irritant to the bilateral relations.

The Nobel committee has said that out of the 65 invitations sent out to embassies in Oslo, 19 have been declined so far.

The countries which have refused to attend include, besides China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq.

Speculations are rife to the reason for the other nations declining the invitation as many are believed to have done so in order to avoid displeasing China.

Russia said its ambassador will not be attending due to prior engagements.

The United Nations will also not be sending its representative, which is a normal practice. The UN deputes its personnel only if the organisation wins any award.

Liu, a renowned Chinese artist and human rights advocate, received the award even though he is serving an 11-year sentence for "inciting subversion of state power."
