Famous Kollywood Actor Vijay, finally makes political landfall in Tamil Nadu

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu may have swept the rural elections held in nine reorganised districts, but upon a deeper perusal of the results shows that actor Vijay – considered second only to megastar Rajinikanth in popularity charts – has taken a silent plunge into politics, through his fan club.

Actor seems to have used the recent rural local body elections held in nine districts to successfully test the political waters in Tamil Nadu.

Candidates of (VMI), the actor’s fans welfare association, won 115 of the 169 local body posts, recording a 68% strike rate.

The vast majority of the seats the fan club contested were panchayat wards

Of the 115 candidates who won, 13 were elected unopposed. About 45-47 are women

This was the first time Vijay had given consent to office-bearers of his fan club – All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam – to contest the elections.

Bussy Anand, general secretary of All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, has been the conduit between Vijay and politics and has been fronting up on his behalf and making press statements.

It is interesting to note that there has been no official announcement from actor Vijay.

Vijay’s political entry is not bereft of controversy. It was his entry into politics that was the reason that led to a public tussle between him and his father S A Chandrasekhar after the latter tried to form Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI), another outfit in his son’s name though without his permission.

Vijay had to make a public statement to disown links with VMI and also filed a case against his father and mother Shoba Sekar, urging them to refrain from using his name or photo for any sort of political meeting or activities.
