Put control on Hafiz Saeed: India to Pak

Toronto: India has urged Pakistan to curb the activities of individuals like Hafiz Saeed, the Jamaat-ud Dawa chief and mastermind of 26/11 attack in Mumbai who makes inflammatory speeches against India publicly.

“Our home minister has just visited Pakistan and our concern about Hafiz Saeed was effectively conveyed to the Pakistan government,” said Indian foreign secretary Nirupama Rao here on Sunday.

“When Pakistan says that under its law it is difficult to take action, we think it is still possible for Pakistan to put some control on such individuals.

“It is not doing any good for the relations of the two countries,” Rao said.

“It continues to be our hope that Pakistan will pay attention to individuals like Hafiz Saeed,” she said.

Earlier, Pakistan said the extremist views in the country is not majority view.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, pleading helplessness over the inflammatory anti-India speeches in his country by people like Hafiz Saeed, said: “All sorts of people make all sorts of speeches. There are views in Pakistan I can do nothing about.

He said under democracy in Pakistan it is difficult to curb such opinions but vast majority do no agree with the views.

Indian home minister P Chidambaram during his visit to Pakistan recently said India is not questing the intention of Pakistan but is looking for outcomes in the 26/11 Mumbai attack probe and prosecution.

“Terrorists should not have free run anywhere in SAARC [ South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation],” said Chidambaram in a joint press briefing with his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik.
