80 killed in Taliban attack on Pak mosques

Lahore, May 28 (IBNS): Taliban gunmen killed at least 80 people in Pakistan’s Lahore on Friday after they stormed two mosques and fired indiscriminately, media reports said.

Over 80 people had been killed in the twin attacks in Garhi Shahu and Model Town while about 95 others were injured, said Pakistan’s Geo TV.

The terrorists also took hostage.

The siege ended later and the troopers also rescued many hostages.

Lahore’s deputy commissioner Sajjad Bhutta earlier said at least 70 people were killed and 78 injured in the twin attacks.

Reports said that terrorists armed with suicide vests, automatic weapons and grenades stormed the two mosques in the heavily-congested area of Garhi Shahu and upscale Model town in two groups at about 1.45 p.m. local time.

The TTP Punjab, a wing of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan,  has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Associated Press of Pakistan quoting Bhutta said all the injured were being treated in different hospitals and there was no shortage of para medical staff and beds in the hospitals.

He said an injured police officer was also being treated in Mayo Hospital. Sajjad Bhutta said the heads of three suicide bombers were found in Garhi Shahu.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan ( TTP)  is the main Taliban militant umbrella group in Pakistan primarily in conflict with the central government.

Among the group's stated objectives are resistance against the Pakistani army, enforcement of sharia, and attacks against American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.
