Ōrewa Café Fire Under Suspicion

A late-night blaze that tore through the popular Sunflour Café in Ōrewa is being treated as suspicious, police confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the Hibiscus Coast Highway around 11.30pm on Saturday, with crews from Silverdale and East Coast Bays breaking into the two-storey building to contain the flames.

The café’s owners shared their heartbreak on social media, describing the fire as “devastating” but expressing relief that no one was injured. Reported by Stuff

Photos revealed the charred remains of their beloved community hub. A scene guard stayed overnight as police and Fire and Emergency NZ investigators probe the cause.

A FENZ shift manager said crews responded to the fire in the two-storey building from Silverdale and East Coast Bays fire stations, and forced their way inside to put out the fire.

Ladder trucks sent from Te Atatū and Parnell were stood down.
