Wellington garden discovery reveals human remains from the 1600s

Human remains discovered in a Wellington garden last year have been confirmed to date back several centuries, potentially to a period before European settlement.

According to a report by Stuff, radiocarbon testing on the remains, which were found in Ōwhiro Bay, indicates they originate from the 1600s or 1700s. Authorities say the findings provide important historical context and will now be reviewed further.

Detective Constable Sarah Steed said the information will be supplied to the Coroner for consideration, Stuff has reported.

According to Stuff, the remains were uncovered on June 22, 2025, when a homeowner made the unexpected discovery in his garden. In accordance with standard procedures, police secured the site and initiated an investigation.

Once the Coroner has completed the necessary processes and formally releases the remains, police have stated they will work closely with local iwi to determine an appropriate burial site, ensuring the remains are treated with cultural respect, as reported by Stuff.
