The unemployment rate rose to 4.3 percent in the three months ended March from 4 percent at the end of December.

Stats NZ said the increase is a result of fewer jobs being created and immigration increasing the size of the workforce.

Annual wage growth was steady at 3.8 percent.

The data was largely in line with expectations.
