Two people have died after a major crash involving a car and a truck on State Highway 1 near Timaru, Canterbury.
Police said the collision occurred around 5.10 pm on Thursday near the intersection with Brosnan Road, just north of Timaru. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but two individuals were pronounced dead on-site, reported Stuff.
A third person was airlifted to the hospital in a serious condition.
The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene, and investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area and follow instructions from emergency crews as delays are expected, Stuff reported.
Police have thanked the public for their patience and cooperation as they work to clear the site and determine what led to the tragic incident.
