Aucklanders may have spotted giant, eye-catching double-decker buses wrapped in Police branding rolling through the city — part of a new recruitment campaign aimed at enlisting 500 new officers.

The towering buses are now making their way across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Commissioner Richard Chambers says the initiative is aimed at driving visibility and furthering the goal of recruiting 500 additional officers nationwide.

“This campaign represents another positive step toward delivering our target of 500 additional officers,” Commissioner Chambers said.

"These newly decorated double-decker buses seat 500 people, which is exactly the number we want to recruit."

The buses are part of a broader effort to spread awareness across the city.

New call-to-action

“Auckland has always been a key recruitment area for us, and we are keen to be highly visible and advertise far and wide. We know that the buses are ideal for reaching the whole of the city,” he said.

The campaign, which will see the buses on the roads for more than three months, cost $119,800 — covering printing, installation, and a 12-week media buy.

The new Police training campus in Albany is also expected to remove barriers for prospective officers unable to relocate for training.

“The new Auckland training campus at Albany will also help make a career with the Police a reality for those who cannot relocate to Wellington for the full 20-week course,” Commissioner Chambers said.

“That campus is set to welcome its first intake from the start of July. That is a significant development in our recruitment and training.”

Applications remain open across all districts except Canterbury. Police say interest is surging, with 2025 seeing a spike in submissions and the highest total number of applications in a decade.
