shanti niwas seniors set the mood for christmas season in style

In the heart of Onehunga, Shanti Niwas, a dynamic haven for older people within the Indian diaspora, unleashed a whirlwind of festivity to transform Christmas into a dazzling celebration like no other.

The venue echoed with laughter, and Christmas was more than festivity here; it was a bridge connecting generations, cultures, and cherished memories.

Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust is a non-profit organisation that has provided culturally appropriate social support services to senior citizens of Indian and South Asian origin since 1994.

One of the main highlights of the December 13 event was an act depicting the birth of Jesus, which was loved by one and all. The hall resounded with the flowing notes of Christmas carols, sung with enthusiasm and passion by residents, volunteers and visitors alike.

Among the attendees were dignitaries including Honorary Consul of India in Auckland Bhav Dhillon, ACT’s Rahul Chopra and National’s Siva Kilari.

“It is one of the most energetic Christmas celebrations I have attended,” Dhillon said.

“Seeing smiles is invaluable and priceless and reminds us of the importance of being happy. Happiness is an effort you must make. To all my seniors, my message is to try and make an effort to be happy.”

The seniors danced and sang and received Christmas presents from Santa. The attendees expressed their joy and gratitude for participating in the celebrations and looked forward to returning after the holidays with renewed vigour next year.

Notably, an energetic dance by one of the seniors Rajender Kumar on Mithun Chakraborty’s iconic song, 'I Am A Disco Dancer', could give youngsters a run for their money.

Shanti Niwas’ Lifestyle & Activity Manager Vishav Sharma thanked the audience and paid special tribute to the volunteers for making the event successful.

“The atmosphere was alive with humming, dancing, and an overall great time at the event, precisely as we had envisioned.

“I want to express gratitude for the dedicated work of our volunteers, who seamlessly brought the event together, orchestrating the celebrations for the seniors.”
