Quick-thinking police & lifesaver save teen from Paritutu Beach rip
A teenager caught in a rip at Paritutu Beach was safely brought back to shore on Thursday evening after a Police Officer and a member of Surf Lifesaving entered the water to rescue them.
Central Districts Duty Officer Inspector Ashley Gurney praised the quick thinking and bravery of those involved.
“Without the quick thinking and bravery of my colleague and the Surf Lifesaving team member, this incident would likely be drastically worse. I commend them both on their efforts, it is great that no one was seriously injured or worse. I also commend the member of the public who was brave enough to attempt to help the young person,” Inspector Gurney said.
Around 7pm on 1 January, Police received a call reporting that a teen was unable to get themselves back to shore after being caught in a rip. Officers responded immediately, launching a water rescue operation that included tasking a rescue helicopter.
As the teen drifted further from the shore, a member of the public attempted to reach them using a surfboard but was unable to make contact. Acting quickly, the Police Officer on scene and a Surf Lifesaving team member entered the water and used a flotation device to bring the teen safely back to shore.
The teenager was assessed to be in a moderate condition, and the rescue helicopter was subsequently stood down.
The member of the public was able to make their way back to shore safely.
Police remind anyone in water-related emergencies to always call 111.
