New Zealanders will head to the polls on November 7, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has confirmed, setting the stage for a campaign that will decide whether his National-led government wins a second term.

Parliament will be dissolved on October 1, with Writ Day on October 4 and nominations closing at noon on October 8. Advance voting begins on October 26, and the final day for the return of the writ is December 3.

Luxon made the announcement at National’s annual caucus retreat in Christchurch, where coalition MPs gathered for their first meetings of the year away from Parliament. According to 1News, he described November as the "logical time" for an election, saying that among several dates considered, this one felt the most suitable. He added that announcing the date early provides certainty to New Zealanders and allows the government to continue delivering on its agenda.

National Party deputy leader Nicola Willis told 1News that the election announcement marks the start of a serious campaign. She said National aims to maintain progress in the country and avoid returning to past difficulties.

As prime minister, Luxon has the authority to set the election date and has formally advised the Governor-General. Labour is currently holding its annual caucus retreat in West Auckland.

Luxon also clarified his coalition intentions, according to 1News that he is open to working with ACT and NZ First after the election but ruled out partnerships with Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori, citing concerns over spending, taxation, and political agendas.
