Port Hills fire live: Firefighters battle as blaze burns for second day

Firefighters are continuing to battle the Port Hills blaze that has roared across 630 hectares casting a thick pall of smoke over Christchurch.

 

The wildfire has seen 110 househoulds evacuated and a local state of local emergency declared.

Fire crews are still working to bring the blaze under control, with 28 fire appliances, 15 helicopters, two planes and heavy earthmoving machinery at the scene.

Crews have managed to contain a grass fire that was threatening structures near Rolleston.

Residents who have been evacuated have not yet been to return home. Two evacuation centres at Halswell and Lincoln were opened for residents forced to leave home.
