PM Luxon highlights PM Modi's interest in sport ahead of NZ visit

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says sport is likely to be one of the topics when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits New Zealand later this week.

Modi is due to arrive in Auckland on Friday for a one-day visit, marking the first visit to New Zealand by an Indian prime minister in four decades.

"The Indian Prime Minister will arrive in Auckland on Friday 10 July and depart on Saturday 11 July."

During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Luxon, meet business leaders and attend an Indian-New Zealand community event, according to Newstalk ZB.

At The Indian Weekender Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame 2026, held in Auckland on Friday, Prime Minister while talking to The Indian Weekender said, "we want to be able to do our formal government

to government meeting, then there is a real chance to showcase some of the sectors but also talk a little bit about sport," he said. 

"Because every time I have talked to Prime Minister Modi,  he has been really interested in why New Zealand is so good at sport," Luxon added.

Speaking on The Mike Hosking Breakfast, Luxon said his Indian counterpart has a strong interest in sport and that discussions could include India's sporting ambitions.

According to Newstalk ZB, Luxon said India wants to host the 2036 Olympics and are interested in our high-tech sports approach.
