Phone distraction sparks near-fatal crash in Hampden

Two injured after driver drifts across road distracted by phone

A driver allegedly distracted by their cell phone caused a crash on Sunday afternoon in Hampden that could have been fatal.

Inspector Sarah Thorn, District Road Policing Manager, said the driver admitted to police they were changing music on their phone when the vehicle drifted across the road at 100kph and collided with an oncoming car.

“They drifted completely onto the other side of the road in a 100kph area, colliding with an oncoming car. It appears that a moment of recklessness could’ve killed them.

“Two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries and given the circumstances, their conditions could have been significantly worse.

New call-to-action

“Roads all over Aotearoa are only going to get busier as we get closer to Christmas and the summer holidays. It’s extremely important we all drive safely to reduce the risk of hurting anyone on the roads.”

Police are continuing their investigation, and charges are expected.

State Highway 1 was closed for several hours while emergency services cleared the scene. Inspector Thorn thanked both the public and volunteers who assisted.

“We also want to thank the volunteers in emergency services who gave up their time to attend,” Inspector Thorn said.

Thorn added a reminder for all drivers to remember to always drive without distractions and impairments. Putting your phone away and keeping your eyes on the road.
