Local businesses in Onehunga remain affected as safety restrictions continue, three days after a building fire closed a busy section of the road near Onehunga Mall.

The Indian Weekender visited the scene early morning, two days after the fire. The building, located next to a Onehunga Mall

superette and MP Greg Fleming’s electorate office, appeared heavily damaged, with cordons in place and the streets nearly empty.

While some areas still remain cordoned off, some businesses have reopened after a temporary safety fence was installed on the opposite side of the street.

Business Onehunga encouraged locals to continue shopping locally to help retailers recover.

"If you’re looking for a coffee, lunch, everyday essentials, or a place to browse, Onehunga Mall is still very much open for business," it said in a Facebook post.

“Our Onehunga businesses are open, resilient, and ready to welcome you,” the group added.

“While some areas of Onehunga Mall are affected by ongoing safety works, most businesses between Church Street and Arthur Street are OPEN and would genuinely appreciate your support. Choosing to shop locally helps our businesses stay strong and keeps our town centre vibrant.”

The statement also highlighted assistance for those directly affected by the fire. “For any businesses or individuals displaced at this time, Business Onehunga’s doors are open, with hot desks available—please reach out if you need support,” it added.

Another business, Curry Leaf Onehunga, posted on Facebook that it is now open for dine-in and takeaway services.

The fire, which occurred last Sunday just after 8pm, involved a building next to MP Greg Fleming’s electorate office and included the remains of a property gutted in a 2021 blaze. Firefighters from across Auckland responded, bringing the blaze under control while police and St John staff assisted at the scene.

Three days later, the wreckage remains visible and safety restrictions continue while property owners plan to either strengthen or remove the damaged building.
