Ms. Muanpuii Saiawi assumed charge as India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand on Saturday, 21 March 2026. and, upon her arrival in Wellington, paid floral tribute at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. In a Facebook post, the High Commission of India in New Zealand said, “His message of peace and justice continues to guide us and reminds us of truth, tolerance, and humanity.

Saiawi, who hails from the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram, takes on the role of High Commissioner, the senior-most diplomat representing one country in another Commonwealth nation and serving as the head of mission. The position entails overseeing diplomatic relations, strengthening trade and cultural engagement, providing consular services, and managing the overall functioning of the High Commission, while acting as the principal link between the governments of India and New Zealand.

Her appointment comes at a significant juncture in India-New Zealand relations, with both countries seeking to deepen engagement following the recent conclusion of Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

According to RNZ, Saiawi brings extensive diplomatic experience, having served at multiple Indian missions abroad. Her previous assignments include roles as first secretary (political) at the Indian Embassy in the Republic of Korea, first secretary (information, education and culture) in Japan, and counsellor (press, information, culture and tourism) in Israel. She has also contributed to key areas, including cyber diplomacy and emerging strategic technologies, within the Ministry of External Affairs.

Over the course of her career, Saiawi has received several recognitions for excellence in service and training. She was awarded the Ambassador Bimal Sanyal Memorial Gold Medal for best officer trainee, a Silver Medal for best dissertation, and was named the best probationer of the 2005 batch of Indian Foreign Service officers.
