Marvel Cinema Cups Spark Safety Alert
A nationwide recall has been issued for illuminated collectable cups featuring Marvel’s Fantastic Four characters, sold at Hoyts Cinemas across New Zealand.
The cups, showcasing the Invisible Woman (blue) and the Human Torch (red), were available between July 1st and 31st, coinciding with the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps.
According to Product Safety New Zealand, the cups do not comply with safety standards regarding button batteries. The screw securing the battery compartment can be removed, and the products lack mandatory warning information about the dangers of button or coin batteries to children, 1News reported.
“This means that purchasers, including children, could potentially access the button/coin battery,” Product Safety said in a statement. “Children are at risk of choking, serious injury or death if they swallow or place the battery inside their body,” 1News quoted.
Consumers are advised to stop using the cups immediately and keep them out of reach of children. The batteries should not be removed or disposed of.
Instead, customers should contact Golden Link Australia Pty Ltd to return the cups for a full refund or register for a replacement collectable cup. Those who have already discarded or gifted the cups are also urged to contact the company, as reported by 1News.
Anyone who suspects a child has swallowed or inserted a button battery should call the National Poisons Centre immediately on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766), and if the child is having trouble breathing, dial 111 without delay, reported 1News.
