Tensions flare as opposing protesters clash in Auckland

A public meeting in Auckland opposing the conflict involving Iran drew a counter-protest on Wednesday night from demonstrators who support the military action and believe it could lead to Iran’s liberation.

New call-to-action

According to a report by Zane Small of Stuff, the meeting took place at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall and was organised to oppose the recent attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States. Attendees gathered inside the venue to voice concerns about the escalation of the conflict and its potential consequences.

“We have Iranian speakers here who are against the war, many of whom are against the regime as well,” Joe Carolan, from Socialist Aotearoa, told Stuff.

While the meeting continued indoors, a group of counter-protesters assembled outside on Dominion Rd, expressing support for the assault on Iran. They argued that the military action could help free the country from what they describe as an oppressive regime.

“What’s happening upstairs, they are not anti-war, they are anti-Trump, anti-Israel, they don’t care about the people of Iran,” Samira Taghavi, a counter-protester, told Stuff.

Tensions between the two groups escalated during the evening, resulting in a brief scuffle between a counter-protester and a masked man holding a sign that read “Israel kills children.” Police intervened and removed the man from the scene.

A police spokesperson told Stuff that the man was spoken to by officers and that charges were being considered, Stuff has reported.
