In a tragic incident, an Indian student from Hyderabad was shot dead during an armed robbery at a gas station in Texas, United States, on Thursday night.

The victim, Chandrashekar Pole, hailed from L B Nagar in Hyderabad and was pursuing higher studies in the US. According to reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire during a hold-up at a gas station in Denton, Dallas, where Pole was working part-time. He sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.

New call-to-action

According to a report by The Hindu, Pole had moved to the US in 2023 after completing his Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery in Hyderabad. He had recently earned a Master’s degree from the University of North Texas and was looking for full-time opportunities while working shifts at the petrol station. His professional profile shows he has been associated with GEICO as a Senior Data Analyst since August 2024, after earlier stints with American Express in Chennai and Hitachi Energy in Bengaluru.

His family in Hyderabad, devastated by the news, has appealed to the government to help bring back his mortal remains. Senior BRS leaders, including MLA Sudhir Reddy and former minister T. Harish Rao, visited the bereaved family to offer condolences.

Rao described the incident as “heart-wrenching,” adding that Pole, a Dalit student who had gone abroad with high aspirations, fell victim to a senseless act of violence. He urged both the Telangana and central governments to expedite the repatriation process, The Hindu reported.

This tragedy comes close on the heels of another fatal shooting in the US, where Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 30-year-old man from Telangana, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California.

New call-to-action

Meanwhile, Denton police have launched an investigation into the Texas gas station shooting. Authorities are yet to confirm details about the assailants, though initial reports suggest one of the attackers was of African-American origin, The Hindu reported.

Efforts are underway to complete formalities for the repatriation of Pole’s body to Hyderabad.
