A shocking incident of racial violence has allegedly taken place in Dublin, where an Indian-origin entrepreneur and senior data scientist, Santosh Yadav, was brutally attacked by a group of teenagers. Yadav, a staff member of the WiSAR Lab and Technology Gateway in Letterkenny, was seriously injured in what he has termed an "unprovoked racist" attack.

Describing the traumatic experience in a long LinkedIn post, Yadav said that he was attacked outside his apartment building after dinner. "Six teenagers attacked me from the back and robbed me of my glasses, broke them, and brutally assaulted me all over my head, face, neck, chest, hands, and legs – and abandoned me on the ground bleeding," he said.

Emergency services moved swiftly once Yadav was able to call the police, known as Gardaí. He was taken in to Blanchardstown Hospital, where a fracture to his cheek bone was confirmed by physicians and he was directed to receive specialist care.

New call-to-action

This attack has brought renewed concerns of racially motivated urban attacks on the rise in Ireland, primarily against the Indian minority and other minorities. In his Facebook entry, Yadav expressed dismay at such attacks on the increase. "This is not an isolated incident. Racist attacks on Indian men and other minorities are on the increase all over Dublin – on buses, in housing estates, and on city streets. And yet, the government remains silent," he stated.

Yadav also denounced Irish officials for inaction and accountability. Calling for immediate action, he addressed various government agencies, including the Government of Ireland, the Indian Embassy in Dublin, and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, demanding firmer action against racial violence. "We deserve to feel safe. We deserve to walk on the streets without fear," he reiterated.

New call-to-action

The post included graphic photos of Yadav with blood coming from his nose and cheek and a shattered set of glasses – a gory visual evidence of the brutal beating.

This comes following another attack on an Indian man in south-west Dublin's Tallaght suburb on July 19. That attack, which is said to have been perpetrated by a gang of around ten youths, was racially inspired as well. Irish woman Jennifer Murray, who went to aid the victim, subsequently posted an emotional video that described the gruesome scene and added that it wasn't the first of its type to have occurred in the area.

As community leaders and activists call for stronger policy measures and safeguards, officials' deafening silence continues to raise alarm over minorities' dignity and security in Ireland.
