India has secured a return to the FIH Women’s Pro League after defeating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final of the FIH Women’s Nations Cup at Auckland’s North Harbour National Hockey Centre on Sunday.

New call-to-action

The victory capped an impressive unbeaten campaign for the Indian side, who earned promotion back to the top-tier international competition just one year after being relegated.

According to a report by Olympics.com, India made a bright start to the title clash and took the lead in the fourth minute through Navneet Kaur. The experienced forward converted the team’s first penalty corner of the match to put the visitors ahead early.

The pressure continued from the Indian attack throughout the opening quarter, with the team repeatedly testing the New Zealand defence. Their dominance paid off again in the 15th minute when Sunelita Toppo deflected a drag flick into the net, doubling India's advantage before the end of the first quarter.

India controlled much of the opening half, creating numerous circle entries and earning several penalty corners while restricting New Zealand's attacking opportunities. The visitors carried their 2-0 lead into the halftime break, Olympics.com has reported.

The Black Sticks responded with greater urgency after the restart, spending more time in attacking areas and searching for a way back into the contest. However, India's defence remained disciplined and organised, ensuring goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam faced limited danger.

New Zealand earned their first penalty corner early in the final quarter but were unable to convert the opportunity. India successfully defended their lead for the remainder of the match to seal the championship.

The Nations Cup triumph guarantees India a place in the 2026-27 FIH Women’s Pro League, which will also serve as a qualifying pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, as reported by Olympics.com.

India's return to the Pro League comes after the team finished at the bottom of the standings during the 2024-25 Pro League season and was subsequently relegated.

The tournament victory also completed an unbeaten run for India in Auckland. The team topped its group with victories over the United States, Japan and Uruguay before producing a dominant 6-0 win over Chile in the semi-finals, as reported by Olympics.com.

New Zealand entered the final as the defending Nations Cup champions, having won the previous edition, but were unable to retain the title on home soil as India lifted the trophy and secured promotion back to the elite level of international women's hockey.
