Immigration New Zealand phone scams on the rise

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is urging the public to be cautious of phone scams, with callers using New Zealand phone numbers and pretending to be from Immigration NZ.

“These calls are not genuine,” INZ said in a statement.

“Immigration New Zealand will never contact you by phone asking for payments,” it added.

INZ said scammers often claim there is an urgent problem with a person’s visa to create pressure or fear.

“They may ask you to ‘press 1’ or speak to an operator. In some cases, callers have demanded payment, requested personal information such as passport or bank details, or threatened legal action if you do not comply,” INZ explained.

New call-to-action

“These calls do not come from INZ, and we urge people not to engage,” it added.

Immigration has also provided guidance on how to spot suspicious calls and what to do if you receive one:

  • do not provide any personal or financial information
  • hang up immediately
  • report the scam to CERT NZ using their online reporting form:

  • if you are in New Zealand, you can also call Netsafe on 0508 638 723.

Individuals who are still in doubt about their visa status or application and are seeking reassurance are urged to contact the INZ Service Centre directly.

“Our staff can confirm your details and discuss any questions you may have about your current visa situation,” INZ said.
