Convicted sex offender Howard Temple spotted at community market
Convicted sex offender and former Gloriavale leader Howard Temple has sparked renewed controversy after being seen at a community market on the West Coast.
According to a report by 1News, Temple pleaded guilty to 12 charges of abuse against six girls over a 20-year period. Last month, the 85-year-old was sentenced to 26 months in prison but was released on bail while awaiting the outcome of an appeal.
The incident occurred on Friday at the Moana market near Lake Brunner, where a member of the public spotted Temple attending the family-friendly event alongside other members of the Gloriavale community and took a photograph.
The woman, who is friends with some of Temple’s victims, said they were distressed by his presence at the market.
“I think it shows how out of touch Gloriavale is and how they can’t be trusted to make good decisions. It was grossly uncomfortable,” she said, as quoted by 1News.
A former Gloriavale member also questioned why Temple was allowed to attend the event.
“I don’t understand how the judge didn’t realise that adult supervision from a current Gloriavale member was a bad idea. Afterall, his offending occurred with other adults present and watching,” 1News has quoted.
Another person with links to former members and supporters said the public expects people who plead guilty and are sentenced to face stricter restrictions.
“It’s a strange justice system. It shows a lack of social etiquette, understanding and consideration for others,” quoted 1News.
According to 1News, Temple’s bail conditions require him to live at a Gloriavale-owned property away from the main compound. Before sentencing, he was permitted to return to the community for work and to attend worship services.
Temple’s lawyer, Michael Vesty, said his client had not breached any bail conditions, noting he is permitted to have contact with people under the age of 18 if supervised, 1News has reported.
Gloriavale’s Overseeing Shepherd, Stephen Standfast, has been approached for comment.
