Bus services were disrupted on Sunday afternoon after a bus struck an overpass and caught fire near the Constellation Busway Station on Auckland’s North Shore.

New call-to-action

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 1pm, following reports that a bus had hit the edge of an overpass on Sunset Road while passing underneath. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, sending thick plumes of smoke into the surrounding area, Stuff reported.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson said three fire crews from Takapuna, Albany, and a volunteer team from Greenhithe responded to the blaze. The fire was brought under control soon after their arrival, as reported by Stuff.

Auckland Transport confirmed that the bus was not in service at the time of the incident and that no passengers were on board. The driver managed to exit the vehicle safely and was unharmed.

New call-to-action

Police and emergency services cordoned off the area, and nearby bus services were temporarily diverted as a precaution. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
