Heavy snow, flooding, and avalanches have forced partial closures on the Routeburn and Kepler Tracks, while the reopening of the Milford Track has been delayed again until 19 November due to ongoing avalanche risks.

New call-to-action

Department of Conservation (DOC) operations director Aaron Fleming said the extreme weather had caused slips and damage across Southland’s popular hiking spots.

“We’ve had a lot of snow sitting in the alpine areas, and some avalanches have come down, causing track damage,” he said.

Trampers with bookings are being contacted for refunds or alternative options, and DOC will issue an update on 7 November.

The Routeburn Track remains closed between Routeburn Falls Hut and Lake MacKenzie Hut due to deep snow and avalanche danger, while parts of the Kepler Track are inaccessible and affected by flooding.

Fleming urged hikers to stay alert and flexible with their plans: “Be prepared to turn back if conditions worsen.”

New call-to-action

Meanwhile, the Hump Ridge Track remains open despite storm damage, though slips and infrastructure issues have also been reported in the Catlins, Forest Hill Scenic Reserve, and Dart Track in Mount Aspiring National Park.
