Air New Zealand has forecast one of its busiest festive seasons on record, with a major surge in travel expected across New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and the United States during Christmas 2025. Reported by Travel and Tour World.

Strong demand across both domestic and international routes points to millions of passengers travelling for holidays, family reunions, and summer getaways.

New call-to-action

The airline’s outlook shows travel volumes rising steadily from mid-December through early January, driven by school holidays, leisure travel, and continued consumer confidence. As the peak summer season in Aotearoa approaches, airports and tourism hubs nationwide are preparing for sustained pressure on infrastructure and services.

Festive Travel Demand on the Rise
Passenger numbers are expected to peak just before Christmas Day and again in early January. This growth reflects long-standing summer travel trends, now amplified by strong booking data and interest in sun-focused and long-haul destinations.

Major Airports Brace for Crowds
Auckland, Queenstown, and Wellington airports are forecast to handle the highest volumes, operating close to capacity throughout the holiday period. These hubs will play a critical role in managing both domestic and international connections.

Domestic Travel Led by the South Island
Around 1.6 million passengers are expected to fly domestically. Queenstown is projected to see about 260,000 passengers, while Nelson may welcome 150,000 and Dunedin around 110,000, highlighting the continued strength of regional tourism.

Peak Domestic Travel Days
Friday, December 19, is forecast to be the busiest domestic travel day, with up to 32,000 passengers. December 21, 22, and 23 are also expected to see heavy traffic.

International Travel Remains Strong
Approximately 1.1 million passengers are expected on international routes. Australia leads demand, with Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane ranking as the busiest overseas destinations. Pacific Island routes such as Fiji and Tahiti continue to attract sun-seeking travellers, while long-haul travel to the US remains resilient, with Los Angeles seeing steady volumes.

Planning Advised for Smooth Travel
December 20 and January 3 are expected to be the busiest international travel days. Passengers are advised to check in online, arrive early, and plan ahead, especially during peak periods.

Air New Zealand’s outlook signals a strong festive season for travel and tourism, reflecting ongoing recovery and robust demand across key global markets.
