A 92-year-old woman is left with just $2 after falling victim to a calculated scam in which a man posing as a tradesman drains her life savings.

New call-to-action

According to a report by 1News, the incident takes place last February when Cecily is approached at her home by a man offering to do small jobs, claiming he needed work to “fill his fridge.” Gaining her trust, he offers to carry out maintenance work around the house.

"He offered to clean my gutterings out and just check the roof for some growing moss," she tells Seven Sharp's Hilary Barry. "I said, 'Oh yes, go ahead. No problem'," as quoted by 1News.

Cecily initially agrees to pay him $200. However, the situation escalates when the man later claims his car has broken down and asks for more money.

New call-to-action

The pensioner says she is told he needs $800 for repairs. "It was all a big lie."

The deception continues over time as the scammer repeatedly asks for money. Cecily says the lies "kept going until I had $2 left".

In total, she loses $10,000, her entire life savings. "That’s it, he’s drained me dry. He’s gone."

Cecily explains that she felt compelled to help because the man appeared genuine and in need. "was so nice, sounded so caring and that, all promises, he’d pay me back,” as quoted by 1News.

After realising the truth, she says the emotional impact is overwhelming. "so ashamed of myself”.

"I just felt… I got sucked in."

Authorities later arrest the scammer, who is subsequently sent to prison for the offence.

Following the incident, Cecily’s daughter Wendy takes control of her bank account to prevent further financial harm. She describes the emotional toll on the family, 1News has reported.

"That’s been really tough, you know? Just emotionally, knowing that somebody just took that money," Wendy says.

She also questions the mindset of offenders. "Why does he think he’s so entitled that he can just come and more or less groom [victims], get their trust, and then take all their life savings?"

Experts warn that such scams are often deliberate and targeted. Age Concern’s Karen Billings-Jensen describes Cecily’s experience as "really awful," as quoted by 1News.

"It just is such an awful example of really predatory and targeted behaviour. This was planned, this wasn’t opportunist and I think that’s what makes it seem so awful," 1News has quoted.

She highlights that older victims face greater financial challenges after being scammed. "There’s a shorter runway for someone on a fixed income to really bounce back financially".

"For older people, the impact is really bad."

Billings-Jensen urges people to remain alert to warning signs. "Scammers have a sense of urgency," she explains. "They will try and rush people to make decisions and not seek help or talk to someone. Things like 'you must do this now', 'if you don’t act, you’re at risk'."

She also recommends improving awareness and security measures. "that just help people to be a bit more aware".

Emphasising the importance of communication, she adds, "But normally, it’s just making sure that we can be open and feel comfortable knowing that we’ve got people that we seek advice from, whatever age we are," 1News has quoted.

She notes behavioural changes may indicate someone has been scammed and stresses the importance of staying connected. "Staying connected, being able to talk to people in your community and your family, with your friends, is what just helps break down some of the stigma," 1News has quoted.

For those who suspect fraud, immediate action is crucial. "Contact your bank if you think that your financial wellbeing has been compromised."
