Surya Namaskar, Guided Sessions, & Unity: Rotorua's Yoga Day Celebration

The 11th International Day of Yoga was celebrated with enthusiasm and unity at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua on Saturday, 21 June 2025, in collaboration with the High Commission of India to New Zealand.
Centred on this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” the event highlighted the connection between personal well-being and planetary health. As part of the nationwide Health for Humanity Yogathon (June 14–28), the celebration encouraged people of all ages to learn about yoga and embrace it as a daily practice for holistic wellness.
The session was led by experienced local yoga instructors Nilamani Wright and Amy Jozwiak, who regularly teach at the Centre. Participants were guided through a series of postures and breathing exercises designed to promote physical strength, inner calm, and mental clarity. The session concluded with a group Surya Namaskar sequence, leaving attendees feeling centred and rejuvenated.

“It was uplifting to see so many people come together in the spirit of yoga. Events like this remind us that yoga is not just exercise—it’s a path to harmony within ourselves and with the world around us,” said Nilamani Wright, reflecting on the event.
The gathering attracted participants from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Māori, Italian, German, American, Australian, Chinese, French, Cook Islands, Indian, and Fijian communities—underscoring yoga’s power as a shared practice that transcends cultural boundaries.
Dr Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, thanked the yoga teachers for facilitating an engaging and energising session, and acknowledged the vibrant participation of all attendees. He encouraged everyone to continue their yoga journey and share its benefits within their communities.
Following the session, attendees enjoyed light refreshments kindly provided by Mayank Gulati from Indian Palate Restaurant.
The Hindu Council of New Zealand expressed heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of the event and looks forward to continuing the journey of health, unity, and well-being in the years to come.
