As it marks another milestone in its journey, Radio Spice is turning the spotlight on the unsung heroes of New Zealand’s Punjabi community.
To celebrate its anniversary this year, the much-loved Punjabi radio station has launched the official poster for Punjab to Aotearoa, an upcoming documentary that delves into the history and legacy of early Punjabi settlers in Aotearoa. The timing of the poster release—on the station’s birthday—is no coincidence. It’s a deliberate gesture, linking Radio Spice’s story to the trailblazers who made this community what it is today.
Set to premiere on 16 May 2025 at the Indian High Commission in Wellington, the documentary is being described as a heartfelt cinematic tribute to generations of Punjabi migrants who came to New Zealand in search of a better life—and helped build a stronger, more diverse country along the way.
“This documentary is not just a film—it’s a preservation of legacy,” said Navtej Randhawa, spokesperson for Radio Spice and one of the driving forces behind the project. “It honours those who laid the foundation for our thriving Punjabi community in Aotearoa. We’re grateful for the support of the Indian High Commission and proud to showcase this story on such an important platform.”
Through rare archival footage, personal accounts, and community voices, Punjab to Aotearoa explores the many layers of the migrant experience—from the labour of the first arrivals in agriculture and trade to the aspirations of their children and grandchildren, now shaping New Zealand’s civic, business, and cultural life.
The documentary touches on themes of identity, belonging, sacrifice, and resilience—woven together with care and intent. It’s an invitation to younger generations to look back, and to the wider public to listen and learn.
With the premiere just around the corner, Radio Spice is encouraging cultural organisations, educators, the media, and the wider Kiwi public to support and engage with the project.
