The New Zealand Gujarati Sports and Cultural Association (NZGSCA) hosted its Annual Grand Awards Night on Saturday, 25 July, bringing together members of the community for an evening celebrating sporting excellence, cultural heritage and charitable giving.
This year's event featured a Pacific Island theme and included cultural performances as the centrepiece of the evening.
Now in its 36th year, NZGSCA said it continues to grow as a sports, cultural and charitable organisation, with record-breaking participation across the New Zealand Gujarati community.
The evening also recognised the association's founding members, paying tribute to those who have served the organisation since its inception in 1990.
NZGSCA President Ritesh Raniga said the association plays an important role in connecting younger generations with their heritage.
"We are giving the next generation an opportunity to proudly embrace both their New Zealand identity and their Gujarati heritage," Raniga said. "For me, seeing that connection thrive has been the greatest reward of all."
A highlight of the awards night was the presentation of Special Recognition Awards to four athletes currently representing New Zealand on the international stage:
Kamini Maganla (Yogasana)
Payas Jajal (Table Tennis)
Eesha Ranchhod (Karate)
Pinakin Patel (Seniors Hockey)
The association also presented trophies to winners of various domestic sporting competitions held throughout the year.
As part of its charitable initiatives, the gala included a live auction that raised funds to support the work of Hato Hone St John New Zealand and St John Fiji.
