Russian forces continue to advance in Kyiv

New explosions are heard in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv as Russian forces capture a nearby airbase.

Earlier, Russian troops appeared to have advanced into the outskirts of Kyiv, as authorities told people to prepare petrol bombs and take up offers of arms.

It's the second day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the BBC is reporting that the war is now on the doorsteps of Kyiv residents.

Some 18,000 guns have been handed out to Ukrainians who have volunteered to defend their country against the ongoing Russian invasion.

The city's mayor, the former heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, says five blasts have been reported across the capital, with some explosions heard near a power station in the north of the city.

"The emergency services are [responding]. We're finding out the details," Klitschko said.

"The situation now - without exaggeration - is threatening for Kyiv," he added. The night, he said, would be "very difficult".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pleaded with the international community to do more, saying sanctions announced so far were not enough.

The president also appeared in a video in an effort to deny Russian reports that he had fled the city.

Thousands of Ukrainians are trying to escape to other countries, whilst thousands more have been sheltering in the underground metro system and other forms of shelter during the shelling.

US President Joe Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin's action was about naked aggression and he unveiled new sanctions on its banks and wealthy elite and export restrictions.

Nato leaders say they are deploying more troops to Eastern Europe after Russia's invasion.

"No one should be fooled by the Russian government's barrage of lies," the 30 leaders say in a joint statement.

Britain, Canada, the EU, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and others have also unveiled sanctions against Russia, targeting banks, military exports and members of Putin's inner circle.
