March 2017 is when Nintendo will launch Switch- its latest innovative gaming console. Gamers have been speculating for months about what Nintendo will come up to replace the popular Wii U console. There have been rumours, leaks and more rumours about the next generation console from Nintendo.
Recently Nintendo released a three-minute video that showcases the Switch. Till now, Nintendo had Wii U which was more of a traditional console and 2DS/3DS which were a portable gaming console. Nintendo Switch combines the functionality of both into a single platform so you can play on your TV in your living room or take it out for a go. In concept, it is not unlike those tablets which can be docked along with a keyboard and be used as a traditional computer or can be detached and taken out to be used as a stand-alone device.
The good thing about Nintendo Switch is that you do not need to buy two separate games for two different hardware platforms. So you can buy little memory card sized cartridges which can be used for living room playing or outdoor gaming. When playing in living room, you play on the Switch Dock and you can detach the controllers and take the Switch console out when you need portability. The controllers are known as Joy-Cons and additionally, there is Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for more serious gaming.
While it has been knowing that Nintendo Switch uses a NvidiaTegra chip for high-performance portable gaming, many other details are still sketchy. Gamers around the world are curious and waiting with baited breath to learn more and get their hands on Switch.
With an onslaught of gaming on mobile phones- which have evolved into serious gaming platforms- is there a future of a separate portable gaming device? The jury is still out on this one. Also, the modular approach of the device is interesting. Recently, there have been many efforts at bringing modular concepts to the mainstream. LG’s mobile phone G5 had an innovative modular design but it failed to take off. Google was also working on what is called Project ARA- supposedly a modular phone- but it was killed by Google and apparently it is no longer in works. So will Nintendo be successful with Switch? Only time will tell.
