Rowers, shooters brighten up India's day at Asian Games

Rowers and shooters won three bronze medals while the assurance of at least a silver from archers and two bronze medals from squash gave India something to smile about on the sixth day of the competition at the 17th Asian Games at Incheon Thursday.
With three medals during the day, India remained static at 15th place and can only hope to better the medal count in the coming days.
The day started with India winning a bronze each in the men's eight event and the singles sculls at the Chungju Tangeum Lake Rowing Center followed by the women's double trap team clinching the third bronze of the day at the Gyeonggido Shooting Range.
Archers also kept alive India's medal hopes as the men's team qualified for the compound final, assuring at least the silver medal, while the women's team will be fighting it out for the bronze at the Gyeyang Asiad Archery Field.
Indian men and women moved into the semi-finals of the Asian Games team squash competition here Thursday and were assured of two more medals, certainly bronze if not of a better hue.
The Indian rowing team of Kapil Sharma, Ranjit Singh, Bajrang Lal Thakhar, Robin Ulahannan, Sawan Kumar Kalkal, Azad Mohammad, Maninder Singh, Davinder Singh and Ahmed Mohammed finished the 2000-metre race with a time of five minutes and 51.84 seconds.
China were the comfortable winners, leading from start to finish to complete the race 3.34 seconds ahead of second placed Japan and 51.14 in front of India.
Earlier, Sawarn Singh finished third in the men's singles sculls with a time of seven minutes and 10.65 seconds, behind Iran's Mohsen Shadinaghadeh and Kim Dongyong of South Korea, who took gold and silver respectively.
The Indian rowing contingent was expected to do better than the five medals -- a gold, three silvers and one bronze -- they won at the Guangzhou Games four years back. But India failed to win even a single medal on the first four days of rowing events. Dushyant Chauhan gave India their first rowing medal - a bronze.
Two more medals Thursday - the last day for rowing - means that India have not even matched their 2010 exploits, let alone better it, but have at least ensured that the rowers finished on a positive note.

In women's double trap, the Indian trio of Shagun Chowdhary, Shreyasi Singh and Varsha Varman shot 279 to claim third place behind China and South Korea, who clinched gold and silver, respectively. Shagun fired 96 with scores of 24, 25, 24, 23 while Shreyasi added 94 points with shots of 24, 22, 22, 26.
Varsha contributed 89 points with scores of 23, 21, 24, 21 which helped India finish ahead of fourth-placed Chinese Taipei, who scored 268 points.
The men's compound archery team set up a final date with South Korea after it beat Iran 231-227 in the semi-finals. The Indian trio of Verma, Sandeep Kumar and Rajat Chauhan managed a total of 15 10s and got a score of 231 from 24 shots.
The Iranian team, comprising Esmaeil Ebadi, Majid Gheidi and Amir Kazempour, had 14 10s for a total of 227. What hurt the Iranians was a poor seven in the second set and an eight in the penultimate shot.
The women's compound archery team will be fighting it out for the bronze medal with Iran after it lost the semi-final by a slim margin to Chinese Taipei. The women's team of Trisha, Purvasha Shende and Surekha Jyothi, shot 224 while the Chinese Taipei team, comprising Ning Meng Wen, I Jou Huang and Ting Ting Wu, had 226. The Indian girls had 11 Xs while the Taipiei team had 13 Xs.
Meanwhile, Verma and Deb also qualified for the semi-finals of the individual compound event. Verma beat South Korean Yonghee Choi 147-142 in the quarter-finals, while Trisha comprehensively defeated Iranian Shabnam Sarlak 142-131.
Verma will next face Malaysian Muhammad Zaki Bin Mahazan while Trisha will take on South Korean Jihyun Seok in the semi-finals. A win in the semi-finals will assure the Indian duo of a place in the gold medal match.
