India defeat Sri Lanka by 21 runs

Hambantota: Riding on Virat Kohli's hundred India defeated Sri Lanka in the first One Day International (ODI) match of the series by 21 runs here on Saturday.
Chasing 315 runs for victory, Sri Lankan batsmen managed to score 293 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the quota of 50 overs.
Kumar Sangakkara gave a handsome fight for the home side with his well played knock of 133 runs from 151 deliveries. He hit 12 boundaries in the innings.
Thisara Perera scored 44 runs in the match from 28 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and a six.
Lasith Malinga remained not out at 19 runs from 10 deliveries and hit two sixes and a boundary.

Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav and R Ashwin picked up two wickets each for India.

Earlier, India scored 314 runs for the six wickets in their quota of 50 overs.

Kohli remained the highest scorer for the side with his 106 runs. Virender Sehwag scored a brilliant 96 runs, missing his century by four runs.

Suresh Raina hit 50 runs while skipper MS Dhoni scored 35 runs in the match.

Thisara Perera picked up three wickets by giving away 70 runs in his quota of 10 overs.
