England crowned World Twenty20 champions

Bridgetown (Barbados): England were crowned the World Twenty20 champions with an emphatic seven wicket win over Australia in the final at Kensington Oval here Sunday.

England easily achieved the target of 148 by losing three wickets in 17 overs after Craig Kieswetter top scored with 63 and Kevin Pietersen made 47.

Kieswetter’s 63 came off in 49 deliveries, and was studded with seven fours and two sixes, while Pietersen smashed four fours and a six in his 31-ball stay.

Put into bat first, Australia made 147 for six in 20 overs with David Hussey scoring a 54-ball 59 and Cameron White hammering 30 runs in 19 balls.

David was Australia's saviour after they had stumbled to eight for three in the third over – and he shared a fifth-wicket stand of 50 with White and also combining to good effect with his brother Michael to help add 55 in the last five overs.

England made a great start after Paul Collingwood surprisingly chose to bowl first. Ryan Sidebottom dismissed Shane Watson edging to wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter, who could only parry into the hands of Graeme Swann at first slip.

Michael Lumb then kept his nerve as Australia apparently lost theirs. David Warner was stranded by a direct hit from cover after Michael Clarke had called him through for an unwise, stop-start single. Brad Haddin was given caught behind by Billy Doctrove after Kieswetter took a superb diving catch down the leg-side. But Haddin appeared less impressed by the quality of the decision - eventually walking off in stunned disbelief, pointing to his hip.

England also lost Michael Lumb (2) with just seven runs off the board in the second over. But the 111 runs partnership for the second wicket between Pietersen and Kieswetter not only helped England recover from a shaky start, it also proved crucial in lifting their maiden International Cricket Council (ICC) title.
